A walk through the woods, a strange old man, a small amulet pressed into his hand. Mo Fan takes it without thinking much about it. Then the thing starts doing things he cannot explain, and suddenly magic is the only subject he cares about. One problem: his father hauls loads for a living, his little sister is crippled, and tuition at a magic school costs more than the family earns in a year. His father calls in an old favor, and somehow Mo Fan walks through the gates. Everyone knows how he got in. Poor kid, charity case, bottom of the class. His marks are a joke and the other students make sure he hears about it. What they do not know is that the amulet did more than spark an interest. Fire answers him when it should not, and something rarer than fire is waking up behind it, something almost nobody gets born with. He keeps his head down and trains while the whispers continue. Beasts prowl the forests outside the city walls, and the students who mock him now will one day stand beside him against those things. His father gave up a lot to put him here. So what exactly happens when the laughing stock turns out to be the most dangerous mage in his year?
