Suzuko is just walking a neighbor kid home from the park. Shu is small. It is an ordinary afternoon, nothing strange about it. Then a gas explosion rips through the street, and she does not die. She opens her eyes in the middle of a corpse-strewn battlefield, four hundred years before she was born. Bandits come for her next. A boy named Shukumaru, there to strip the dead so his starving village can eat, drives them off and takes her in. She never stops looking for Shu. Every day she goes back to that field of bodies, and every day Shukumaru trails after her, all rough edges and no manners at all. Something starts to grow between them anyway, quiet and stubborn, even as she keeps scanning the horizon for a child who might not even be here. What she does not know yet is that this bloody era may not be a place she fell into. It might be the life that was always hers, the one fire took from her once before. So when the chance to go home finally comes, which home will she choose?
