Reiji Ozora never finishes anything. Homework, hobbies, promises. He drops it all the second it stops being fun. Then his friend Maiko drags him into Dragon Drive, a card game so immersive it drops you straight into a virtual world, and every player gets a dragon that matches who they are. Reiji watches the other kids ride in on huge, snarling beasts and figures he is about to get something terrifying of his own. What he gets is Chibi. Tiny, friendly, smaller than he is. A total joke. Except Chibi is not a joke. He is the rarest dragon in the game, and the one thing Reiji has ever wanted to stick with. So he trains. For once he shows up every day, learns how to fight alongside a dragon nobody else believes in, and starts to actually care about something. So when people with their own plans for Dragon Drive show up, plans that put way more than a game on the line, Reiji and Chibi are standing in the middle of it. A quitter and a runt dragon against whatever comes next. What happens when the one thing that finally made him stay turns out to be the one thing everyone else wants to take?
