A river splits the city of Eridan down the middle. One bank belongs to the dragon empire, the other to an alliance of seven cities, and nobody crosses without a reason. In a cramped office on one side of that water, two people run a tiny agency called Ashrey Baf and Sorel Company. Gayus does the paperwork and the worrying. Gigina does the spells, and she is very good at them, and very cold about it. Their jobs are simple: hunt monsters, collect the fee, pay the rent. Then Mouldeen, who rules the kingdom, asks for something strange. Not a hunt. Security work at a grand festival, standing around looking alert while the crowds celebrate. Easy money, or so it seems. Right around the same time, sorcerers start turning up dead, one after another, and nobody can say who is doing the killing or why. Gayus and Gigina take the festival job anyway. Between the monsters that use the same formulas they do and a murderer who seems to know exactly which practitioners to pick off, the two of them have to figure out who is worth trusting. And in a city carved in half by a border, with an empire on one side watching the other, the question they keep circling back to is this: who benefits when the people who can cast spells start disappearing?
