A thousand years ago the Earth broke apart. A clockmaker named Y rebuilt it out of gears, and people have lived on those gears ever since. Electromagnetism got banned because it messes with the machinery. Naoto is a schoolboy who tinkers with mechanisms and keeps failing at it, even though his ears can pick apart any gearbox just from the sound it makes. Then a coffin drops out of the sky and lands right in his apartment. Inside is RyuZU, an ancient automaton built by Y himself. Naoto gets her running again, and she calls him her new master. Word gets around fast. Marie, the sharp-tongued heir to a famous clockmaking family, shows up with her cyborg bodyguard Vainney, and the two of them crash straight into Naoto's life. A fight breaks out, the kind you don't walk away from clean. Somewhere in the middle of it comes the ugly part: the planet itself is coming apart, and plenty of people would rather kill than let that get out. Naoto can hear a broken mechanism from across a room. Can he hear the whole world grinding to a halt before it's too late?
