Mugi won't come out from under the desk. Not for food, not for anyone. Her dog Shiro is gone, and the house has gone quiet in a way that scares Jin more than any thunderstorm. So the cat makes a promise he has no idea how to keep: he'll bring her to Shiro. Where did he get that idea? From Kageyama, his owner, who told him about a rainbow with a bridge at the end of it, where good dogs wait. Here's the problem. Jin is a cat. He doesn't know the way, he doesn't have thumbs, and the rainbow is not exactly around the corner. What he does have is a neighborhood full of pigeons and squirrels who owe him favors, plus a plan that is either brilliant or completely insane. The birds scouting from above, the squirrels running messages along the fences, Jin sneaking past dogs and cars and humans who would never believe a word of it. Everything for one small, sad friend who just wants her dog back. Can a cat really lead a grieving dog to the end of a rainbow, or is Jin about to learn that some promises can be made but never kept?
