Alka kills people for the Clan of the Sword, and she is good at it. Cold, quick, no feeling. That is what her master Hon taught her before a woman named Jin Valel cut him down. Jin is something closer to a demon, and she kills with the same flat emptiness Alka carries in her own chest. So Alka goes looking for her. Then the road throws three women at her. Strange ones. Each a deadly fighter in her own style, each ready to test Alka with steel rather than words. They are not just obstacles. They are the last wish of a dead man made flesh, because Hon wanted his student to walk away from the assassin trade before it swallowed her whole. Can Alka hunt down the killer she has sworn to find and still honor the promise she made to the master she lost?
