Kotaro Takebayashi finally gets what every kid in Class E dreams about. The school pulls him out of the rundown annex and moves him up to the main building, where the desks are new and nobody gets shot at during homeroom. His grades earned it. His test scores did the talking. For a while he just sits there, soaking up the quiet, being the success story everyone expected him to be. Then the quiet starts to feel wrong. In the elite class nobody jokes around after the bell, nobody eats lunch on the roof, and the friends he left behind in that creaky old classroom keep drifting further out of reach. Over in Class E, Koro-sensei's students are still plotting his murder, still failing and laughing and getting back up. Takebayashi is stuck in a spot where the reward and the punishment look exactly the same. So now he has to figure out what he actually wants: the spot at the top, or the people he climbed over to get there. And the longer he waits, the harder it gets to walk back through that door and say he made a mistake. Can he really turn his back on the class that taught him more than any textbook ever did?
