Air Master
Maki Aikawa used to fly. Balance beam, vault, the whole thing. Now she does it on concrete, and the landing hurts whoever is standing in front of her. Somewhere along the way she figured out that the only time her heart really kicks is when someone is trying to hit her. So she goes looking for it, night after night, in alleys and under overpasses. Then the street starts talking about her. They call her Airmaster, because she does not just win fights, she climbs the air itself and comes down like a dropped piano. Word spreads fast. Now the people who want a piece of her are not random punks anymore, they are names, and the names are lining up. She is not scared. That is kind of the problem. Every time she walks away, her knuckles are still buzzing and the rest of the night feels gray. Gymnastics gave her grace. The street gives her a reason to use it, and she cannot tell the two apart anymore. What happens when the one thing keeping her alive is the same thing eating her from the inside?
