Academy City churns out kids who can bend physics with their minds, and the strongest of them all is Accelerator. These days he is mostly stuck in a hospital bed, his head held together by machines after a bullet scrambled his brain. The one thing that keeps him there, calm and almost gentle, is a small girl called Last Order. He would burn the city down for her. He says so himself. Then a stranger walks in. A young woman named Estel, clutching a photo of Last Order, clearly scared of something. That something turns out to be Disciplinary Action, a nasty outfit that has burrowed deep into Anti-Skill, the very people who are supposed to keep the peace. They want Last Order. Not for a chat. For a mission, one that will chew her up. So the guy the whole city calls a monster has to drag himself out of bed and go hunting through the dark, with Estel tagging along and no clue whether she can be trusted. He is not a hero. He never claimed to be. But somebody has to stand between a little girl and the people who built her. How far will the strongest esper go when the only thing he still cares about is on the line?
