Kyou Sogoru is the only member of his school's swim club, and he's killing himself to keep it from getting shut down. So when the student council starts circling, he begs the beautiful, unreadable Misaki to appear in a promo video his friend Ryouko has offered to shoot. Fresh faces, new members, problem solved. Misaki says yes. She has one condition: Kyou has to pilot a robot for Cerebrum, the rebel outfit fighting the Gards-Orm, the aliens who have carved up Earth into so-called deuterium zones. He climbs in. And then nothing feels new. The cockpit, the pressure on his body, the whole thing: it's like a memory he can't place, something he's done before, though he's sure he hasn't. Between sorties he meets the other pilots, watches people die, and keeps circling the same question about the world he's fighting for and the life he thought he was living back in Maihama. If none of this is the first time, what exactly has Kyou been forgetting?
