Yawara just wants to be a normal high school girl. Friends, shopping, cute clothes, maybe a boyfriend who makes her heart race. There is one small problem: her grandfather. Jigorou Inokuma is a former Japanese judo champion, and he has been training his granddaughter since she could walk. He has a plan. Olympic gold, a national award, the whole thing. He will sacrifice anything to get it, including what she actually wants. Oh, and Yawara happens to be terrifyingly good at judo. A sport she could not care less about. She hides it, dodges it, keeps her head down. So she keeps her secret close, but every so often someone pushes her, and her body moves before her brain catches up. Watching from the shadows is Kousaku Matsuda, a reporter for a failing newspaper who smells a story and will do anything to drag her into the spotlight. Then real rivals show up, and hiding gets a lot harder. Pick a quiet life and disappoint everyone, or step onto the mat and give up being ordinary? What does Yawara actually want for herself?
