Every night, the Wangan highway in Tokyo turns into a playground for people who only care about one thing: going faster than everyone else. High schooler Akio Asakura learns that lesson the hard way when a surgeon in a Porsche 911 Turbo called Blackbird challenges him and leaves him in the dust. Then a mechanic friend tips him off about a beat up Fairlady Z sitting in a junkyard. Akio takes one look and knows he has to have it. The car has a nickname. The Devil Z. It also has a history: it killed a racer named Akio Asakura, and the new owner happens to share that exact name. Eriko, the dead man's sister, warns him to walk away. He doesn't listen. He crashes it once, then crashes it again, and still he keeps coming back, because nothing else on the road feels like this. Now he's a dropout scraping cash together for repairs, running with the Wangan regulars: the surgeon, a model who races a Skyline GT-R at night, and eventually the reclusive engineer who built the Devil Z's engine and swore he was done. The old man picks up his tools again. Meanwhile the whole route is chasing one car nobody can catch. So what happens when the machine that already killed one Akio Asakura decides it wants another?
