Takumi Fujiwara has beaten plenty of guys on the mountain, but then his AE86's engine blows out mid-race against Emperor's leader Kyoichi Sudou, and just like that, the loss is on him. He starts wondering if he was ever really that good. Then Ryousuke Takahashi, the man behind the Akagi RedSuns, comes to him with an offer: join up, build a real professional racing team. For a kid who just finished high school, it sounds like the obvious next step. Takumi isn't so sure. Before he answers anybody, he wants Sudou again. Same opponent, same score to settle, and this time he plans to finish it. There's also Kai Kogashiwа, a second generation street racer whose father used to battle Takumi's own dad, Bunta. Kai wants a piece of him too. Two races, two grudges, and a decision about his whole future hanging over all of it. So what does Takumi actually want to become?
