Rentarou Futaba is twenty one, stubborn as a mule, and three weeks into running his late father's detective agency. The office doubles as home for him and his two live-in assistants, Sara and Souju, identical twins, fifteen years old, who bicker over breakfast and tag along on cases like it's a game. Small jobs, small trouble, and the three of them always wriggle out of it somehow. Then the trouble stops being small. A modified squid comes back to Nikotamagawa, the same creature Rentarou's father put down two years ago. The Chinese triads want something. The local yakuza want something too. Someone blows up the detective office. Now a cocky kid who inherited a desk and a name has to keep two teenagers alive while every gang in the city circles him. Can he finish what his father started, or is he about to find out exactly how his father died?
