Gaius was born with a crest for creation, and he pushed it as far as any mage could go: the strongest sage alive. Still, he wanted more. He wanted the kind of magic you use with your fists. Since a crest can never be changed, he chose to die and start over. Thousands of years later he wakes up as Mathias Hildesheimer, and the crest he'd always wanted is finally his. Then he finds out what happened while he was gone. Magic has dried up, the old techniques are stories people tell children, and his precious new crest is mocked as the Crest of Failure. Fine. He enrolls at the Second Academy in the royal capital and blows through every test they put in front of him. Nobody there has seen a mage like this, and none of them understand why. What Mathias digs up next is worse than weak spells and bad reputations: demons have been quietly grinding humanity down for centuries. He walked away for a thousand years, and this is what he came back to. Can one man put a whole world's magic back together, or is he already too late?
