Sonic and Tails are kicking back in the shell of a rusted-out airplane on the South Island shore, no plans, no worries. Then a summons from the president of Planet Freedom yanks them off the beach. They barge into his office expecting a crisis and find Dr. Eggman sprawled there like he owns the place. Eggman swears he is not scheming this time. Someone has seized the generator that powers Eggmanland and cranked it past its limit. When it blows, his city and Sonic's home go up with it. Sonic would rather scramble him and leave. But the doctor also grabs the president's daughter, so there is no walking away. The two head into the dark, where a robot double of Eggman is waiting, and the generator keeps ticking. Can Sonic stop the Dark Eggman and the countdown before the whole planet goes up with it?
