In 2050 Derrida Yvain is the golden boy of Rebuild, the company his father built, all because he helped create the Autonomous Machine DZ. Then he and his colleague Nathan spot a flaw in the machines. A bad one. They bring it to the boss and get waved off, so they do what people usually do with a warning they don't want to hear: they go to Nathan's daughter Mage's birthday party instead. Cake, laughter, a normal day. The next morning armed men kick the door in. Nathan doesn't make it out. Derrida crawls into a cold sleep pod and shuts his eyes, and when he opens them again ten years have passed. The world is rubble, the war is everywhere, and the DZs have gone feral, hunting people through the ruins. He is seconds from giving up when he hears his friend's last words again: take care of Mage. So he gets up. A man who slept through the end of everything, walking a broken planet with no idea if the girl is even alive. Where do you start looking for someone in a world that already ended?
