Miaka only tagged along to the National Library to keep her friend Yui company. Then an old book flares red and swallows them both. They land in a strange land, dodge slave traders, and a guy named Tamahome with a symbol on his forehead pulls them out of the fire. One breath later the light grabs Yui and drags her back home alone. Back in the library, Yui watches from the outside, stuck on the pages of a story she can't touch. In the other world, the emperor Hotohori takes one look at Miaka and decides she is the priestess of Suzaku. Collect seven Celestial Warriors, call down the god, get any wish granted. Convenient for a lost schoolgirl. Also convenient for a country on the edge of war. So she says yes. Except the rival empire of Kutou has a god of its own, and a schemer named Nakago knows exactly how to use it. Yui, left behind with nothing but guilt and a book, becomes his pawn: priestess of Seiryu, pointed straight at Miaka. Two friends. Two gods. One war. And when the wishes finally come due, which of them will still want to go home?
