Tsunayoshi Sawada trips over his own feet, gets picked last for everything, and spends his afternoons staring across the classroom at Kyouko, a girl who has never once looked his way. Kids call him Loser Tsuna. He has no friends to speak of, and he has pretty much accepted that this is the whole of his life. Then a baby shows up at his house. The baby is Reborn, and Reborn is a hitman. Not a pretend one, not a toy, an actual gun-carrying killer in a tiny suit, shipped over from Italy by the Vongola, the family that runs the entire underworld. The ninth boss is stepping down. The next in line is Tsuna, whether he likes it or not, and Reborn has moved in as his tutor to make sure he survives long enough to take the chair. Trouble is, Tsuna does not want the chair. He wants to be left alone, and now people are coming after him because he exists. His only backup is a gun-toting infant and a handful of oddballs who somehow treat this as normal. So what does a kid who has never won anything do when the whole criminal world is betting he will not live to see his next birthday?
