Oriko Seki is twelve when a car crash takes her parents, and suddenly she is living at her grandmother's hot spring inn, a creaky old place called Haru no Ya. On day one she meets Uribou. He is a ghost, a dark-skinned boy nobody else can see, and he has opinions. The grandmother, he warns her, did not take her in out of kindness. The old woman wants an heir. She has been waiting for someone to mold into the next innkeeper, and Oriko is the one she picked. Oriko knows nothing about running an inn. Not the rooms, not the guests, not the towels. Uribou's pranks make sure everyone notices, and the misunderstandings pile up fast. Still, something shifts. The job she hated at first starts to pull at her, and she begins to train for real, chasing a title she never asked for. Friends come out of it. Enemies too. Can a twelve-year-old really take over an inn full of ghosts, and does Uribou actually have her best interests at heart?
