October 4. A high school girl gets into a cab, and then she is simply gone. No body, no note, nothing the police can use. What follows is a mess of small moments that should not add up to a disappearance, told over and over by the people who were there. A passenger remembers a conversation. Someone else remembers a face in a window. Each witness swears their piece is the important one, and each one is wrong about that. The stories drift apart, then snap back to the same man behind the wheel: Hiroshi Odokawa, a taxi driver who minds his own business and notices more than he lets on. Everyone connected to the case keeps circling him, and he keeps driving like none of it concerns him. Was he just unlucky enough to be working that night, or did the girl get into his cab because she knew exactly who he was?
