Shogo has a girlfriend now. Neo. They are doing fine, or at least that is the story they tell themselves, until Kanata walks back into his life. An ex. She does not announce herself or explain why she came. She just appears, and suddenly Neo cannot stop measuring herself against a girl who is standing right there in the room. Across town, a different couple is falling apart in a quieter way. Inori and Isshu promised each other they would always watch the fireworks from the same spot, the one where they first became a couple. This year he says work will not let him come. So she goes alone. Same festival, same view, same bench. She stands there and thinks about the last two years, and about the day she told him how she felt. Two stories, a few faces in common, and the same question underneath both of them. Do you wait for someone who stopped showing up, or do you decide they were never going to?
