The Aizu clan lost everything, and Shizuma Origasa lost it with them. Once a celebrated samurai, he now hauls a rickshaw through the streets of Tokyo, one fare at a time, while every spare hour goes to a single search: Sumie, his missing fiancée. Her brother Gennosuke died in his arms and made him promise to keep her safe. Some promises are easier to keep than others. Then a random act of violence flips his life sideways. Shizuma foils an assassination attempt, and the police come knocking with a job offer. He takes it for one reason only. A badge opens doors that stay shut to rickshaw pullers, and somewhere behind those doors is Sumie. What he doesn't expect is the company he'll keep: government loyalists playing their own game, rebels who refuse to lay down arms, courtesans who know more than they let on, foreigners with opinions nobody asked for, and a yakuza named Kyoushirou Shuragami who seems to be everywhere at once. Every answer Shizuma digs up drags him deeper into a city that runs on secrets and knives. The closer he gets to the truth, the less it looks like a simple disappearance. So who exactly is he working for, and what will he have to become to find the woman he promised to protect?
