Tokyo, 1878. Kaoru Kamiya runs a small dojo that's falling apart, and the man calling himself Battousai isn't helping. He stalks the streets killing cops and civilians, and he claims to fight with the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, the sword style her father built to protect life, not take it. So when a quiet wanderer with a cross-shaped scar on his cheek wanders into her life and offers to help her stop the killer, Kaoru takes the deal. His sword is strange, curved on the wrong side, and he seems in no hurry to draw it. That wanderer is Kenshin Himura. Ten years ago he was the real Hitokiri Battousai, the assassin who cut men down for the revolution and then vanished. Now he walks Japan and swears never to kill again. Kaoru finds out eventually, and instead of running, she lets him stay. Friends start to gather around him, and that's the problem: every friend is someone else he has to keep alive without breaking his oath. Ghosts from the Bakumatsu don't forget a face, and new enemies are happy to test whether a man who won't kill can still fight. How long can Kenshin keep that promise when the past keeps knocking?
