A hot-headed kid with a patch over one eye is about to become one of Japan's most feared warlords. This is young Date Masamune, long before the legends, back when he was just a boy with something to prove. The Date clan takes its name from the land itself, a stretch of the old Mutsu province that people now call the city of Date. Sounds like a simple coming-of-age story. It isn't. The whole thing was cooked up as the first entry in a local tourism project, a way to show off the region's sights and charm. And the studio behind it? A brand new Gainax outpost in Fukushima, finishing the work by the end of March. So you get sword fights and superpowers, sure, but also a kid fighting to grow into his own name while an entire town rides on whether he does. The private screening comes in April, then anime events, then the internet. Will Masamune become the man the legends promised, or will the boy get swallowed by the shadow of the name he was born with?
