Mahoro keeps house for Suguru and his friends, cooks their meals, scolds them for the mess, and somewhere in the middle of all that ordinary life she keeps a countdown running in her head. She is an android with a battery that will not last forever. The days tick down anyway, quiet and merciless, while the kids around her have no idea. Then a second android girl shows up, and instead of a rival she latches onto Mahoro like a lost puppy. She follows her around, copies her, refuses to leave her side. That is the easy part. The hard part is Suguru. He is starting to feel something for Mahoro that has nothing to do with chores, and she knows exactly how little time she has left to give him. Every laugh at the dinner table, every stupid argument about homework, every night she tucks him in costs her another day. The girl who clings to her is watching that clock too. So what happens when the person you need most is built to leave, and the one person who understands that is the last one you would have chosen?
