Autumn 1937. The army wants eyes on every country that matters, so Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki builds his own unit from scratch. D Agency answers to him and no one else. Rumor has it he once pulled secrets out of the enemy himself, until a friend sold him out. What came next was a prison cell and a long stretch of torture. He walked away missing an arm, leaning on a cane, dragging his left leg. They call him the Lord of Darkness. He drills his eight men in ways that make regular officers wince: no salutes, no ranks, no uniforms if the job calls for something else. The point is not to fight. The point is to disappear into a crowd, learn a language until it sits on your tongue like your own, crack a safe, smile at the right stranger. His recruits come from nowhere in particular. Clerks, students, men with no family asking questions. Then he drops them into Asia under borrowed names, and the war creeps closer while they work. So what happens when the mask slips, when one agent starts wondering who he is underneath all those faces?
