God made the world in six days, but the animals only took him two. That part never makes it into the official story. By the time the paperwork lands on the desk of the Heaven's Design Team, the angel Shimoda has just been hired to run messages between them and the big client upstairs, and nothing has prepared him for what he finds. The requests coming down are absurd. Make something with a neck that long. Give it spots. Now put the spots somewhere else. The designers sketch, argue, scrap entire species over lunch, and pitch things like unicorns that God quietly files away and never approves. Then there is the other pile of questions they keep getting asked: why some animals taste so good, which one in the ocean hits the hardest, and what actually happens when a bird goes up against a snake. Shimoda mostly stands there holding a clipboard while his coworkers turn divine whims into claws and hooves and wings. But with deadlines this tight and a client this picky, how many of their ideas ever make it off the drawing board?
