Japan got crowded, the dead got pushed out, and suddenly nobody could sleep. Old spirits lost their graves, their shrines, the quiet corners they'd haunted for centuries, so they started wandering into apartments and offices and hot spring inns, annoyed and very vocal about it. Somebody had to clean this up. Enter the ghost sweeper: a freelance exorcist who hunts the supernatural for cash. Reiko Mikami is the best in the business and charges accordingly. Her team is a high school kid named Tadao who gets paid almost nothing and spends most of his shift thinking about women, plus Kinu, a sweet teenage ghost who tags along like it's the most normal thing in the world. A haunting near Jinkotsu Hot Spring sounds like easy money. It is not easy money. What follows is a mess of angry poltergeists, a boss who treats danger as a line item on an invoice, and two sidekicks who cause about half the trouble they're hired to fix. Tadao usually ends up possessed, flattened, or both. Kinu smiles through all of it. Mikami sends the bill. But when the ghost in front of you is furious because the living paved over its home, is it really the villain here?
