Mana is thirteen, and the grown-ups around her have stopped believing in anything they cannot swipe open on a screen. So when strange things start happening all over town, the kind that leave adults spooked and whispering, she does the only thing that makes sense to her: she writes a letter to the Youkai Post. She isn't even sure anyone will answer. By that same evening, a boy with one eye and a shock of wild hair is standing in front of her. Kitaro came to grant her request. Just like that, the curtain pulls back on everything ordinary people were never supposed to see, and Mana finds herself face to face with spirits and monsters her textbooks never mentioned. Her friend is getting picked on at school, the town is crawling with angry things, and Kitaro is the only one who can deal with them. The two of them start working side by side, human and youkai, even though neither world seems thrilled about it. Mana wants to understand what is really going on. Kitaro just does what he does. But the deeper she steps into that hidden side of things, the less sure she becomes that she can ever go back to being a normal girl. And what happens when the youkai decide they have had enough of staying hidden?
