A week before the big concert, the conductor stops the orchestra and singles out one man: Gauche, a cellist whose timing is off, whose playing has no feeling in it. The other musicians pack up and go home. Gauche goes back to his cottage alone and starts practicing. Then something strange happens. A cat shows up at his window and starts talking to him. Over four nights, one animal after another comes knocking. A cuckoo drills him on rhythm. A badger sits there and judges him. A mouse, of all things, teaches him what tenderness sounds like on four strings. Each visitor pushes him closer to something he could not reach by grinding through scales alone, and by the end he is not just a better cellist but a different man. But the concert is still coming, and the conductor has no idea what has been happening in that cottage after dark. Can a week of strange visitors really fix a musician who has spent his whole life playing without understanding a single note?
