Soichi Negishi came to Tokyo from the countryside with a guitar and a dream: write gentle love songs, finish college, teach small children. The love songs flop. What takes off instead is Detroit Metal City, a death metal band where he performs as Johannes Krauser II, a demon who crawled out of hell and now screams about violence with his face painted white. Same guy. Off stage he is quiet, apologetic, and would rather be listening to Swedish pop. The problem is that Krauser does not stay on stage. Fans worship him. They mob the streets in corpse paint, and some of them get dangerously close to the parts of Soichi's life he actually cares about, like the girl he is trying not to scare off. Every time he tries to walk away from the band, rent, ambition, or plain bad luck drags him back into the makeup chair. And the moment the costume goes on, something in him snaps, and he becomes every bit the monster the crowd is screaming for. So how long can a shy guy keep two lives running before one of them eats the other?
