A girl ends up in the water. Not a pool, not a dream she can wake from, but a whole world under the surface, built from colors and shapes you have never seen in an animated film before. Tian Xiaopeng, the director behind Monkey King: Hero Is Back, spent years on this one, and October Media pushed its 3D work further than it ever had. What comes out is a fantasy set in the present day, not some old legend about emperors and immortals, even though that is what Chinese animation usually serves up. Here the rules are different. Down in the dark she keeps moving, searching for something she cannot name yet, and the ocean keeps answering with things that make no sense. Strange creatures drift past. The deeper she goes, the less the place feels like a location and the more it feels like a mind she has wandered into. Is she looking for a way home, or for something she lost long before she ever got here?
