Nio Chirinu grew up with nothing, then found something good: waiting tables at his grandmother's restaurant, where the regulars know his name and his sister Iroha keeps him laughing. That life gets ripped away in a single night. Hijikata and Okita, two swordsmen from the notorious ronin squad called Miburo, grab Nio and Iroha and dangle them like worms on a hook, all to catch a ring of child snatchers. The bait works. The kids walk away shaken, and then Hijikata drops a stranger offer: come work for us, help keep Kyoto safe. So Nio says yes, and immediately learns he is the weakest person in the room. Every swing of his blade falls short next to his new comrades. Tanaka and Saitou, the two closest to his age, want nothing to do with him, and no amount of training seems to change their minds. To earn their respect he has to figure out what justice even means to him, and get strong enough to survive the enemies already circling. Can a former waiter really stand beside the Miburo, or is he just holding a sword he was never meant to carry?
