Takasugi Shinsaku has a plan. He and his comrade Katsura Kogorou slip aboard a government ship to steal a strange device, a timepiece that bends time itself. His idea is simple: destroy it before the wrong men get their hands on it. But the moment he has it, a thief snatches it away. They chase the thief all the way to Kyoto, expecting the capital they know. What waits for them is not that city. The government has fallen. A deity named Susanoo sits on the throne now, the streets are wrong, and the faces in the crowd belong to a world these two have never seen. They are strangers in their own country. Their mission has not changed. They want to reset time and pull their nation back from the forces tearing it apart. But how do you fix a clock when someone has already smashed it, and how do you fight a god who knows you are coming?
