Akane grew up in the wings, watching her father Tooru build entire worlds with nothing but his voice. He was chasing shinuchi, the top rank in rakugo, and everyone said he was ready. Then came the promotion exam. Tooru performed in front of a packed hall and a panel of judges, and he was good. Really good. The head of the school, Isshou Arakawa, failed him anyway. No explanation. He failed every candidate that day and Tooru walked away from the stage for good, settling into an ordinary life. Akane never let it go. She has been practicing rakugo in secret for years, and now she is a high school senior. A chance encounter with Shiguma Arakawa, her father's old teacher, puts her in front of a real audience, and what she does up there stuns the room. Shiguma takes her on as his apprentice. Her goal is simple and enormous: reach shinuchi, the rank her father was denied, and prove that real talent does not need anyone's permission. But the man who crushed her father's career still runs the school, and he is not known for changing his mind. Can a high school kid really climb to the top of an art form that threw her father out?
