Hotaru has made it almost sixteen years without falling for anyone, and she is fine with that. Give her friends, family, small everyday things, and she is content. Romance, as far as she can tell, is something that happens to other people. Then one winter day she is out with a friend and watches a classmate named Hananoi get dumped, badly, right in front of her. She barely knows him. Later she spots him sitting alone in the snow and holds her umbrella over his head. That is all. A small kindness, nothing more. The next day he confesses to her in front of the whole school. She says no. He does not walk away. He keeps showing up, cutting his hair, digging through the snow for a hairpin she dropped, doing everything he can to make her look at him. She still feels nothing romantic. But she starts to wonder if love is something you learn by doing, so she agrees to date him anyway. Now she is a girlfriend who does not know how to be one, trying to figure out what to give back to a boy who gives her everything. Hananoi wants a love that lasts forever, and he wants it with her. Hotaru wants to understand what she is even feeling. Somewhere between his grand gestures and her quiet confusion, is this real, or is she just going along with it?
