In 2205, the sages known as Saniwa can pull a soul out of cold steel. Their finest work: legendary Japanese swords remade as young men, sent back through time to stop revisionists from rewriting the past. Heavy assignment. But nobody told the swords that. On his first day at the citadel, Yamatonokami Yasusada, the treasured blade of Souji Okita, barely gets his bearings before his old friend Kashuu Kiyomitsu drags him into the daily chaos. Snowball fights that leave everyone soaked. Newcomers welcomed with more pranks than ceremony. Then the government calls, and the goofing off stops on a coin. The same guys who were sliding around in the snow an hour ago march out to guard history itself, and not every mission ends with everyone coming home. So how does a sword meant for killing learn to live like a person, and what happens when the past he swore to protect is the one he misses most?
