Gerda and Kai grew up side by side, two kids in a quiet village, eleven and twelve, close as brother and sister. Then the Snow Queen's mirror shattered somewhere far away, and the splinters scattered across the whole world, each one carrying something evil inside it. One piece flew into Kai's eye. He stopped laughing with Gerda. He stopped caring about anyone at all. Then came the night with the carriage. The Snow Queen took him and drove north, all the way to her castle at the top of the world. The village searched the frozen lake and decided he had drowned. Gerda almost believed it too, except she kept dreaming about him climbing into that carriage. A drunk man muttered that he had seen the same thing, and that was enough. She packed a bag, small as she was, and left. She has no idea where the castle is, or what waits for her along the way, or whether the boy she finds there will even remember her name. What do you do when the person you love has ice in his heart and no memory of you?
