Neko Tsukahara wakes up on an empty lot with no memory of her past, not even her own name. She walks a while. Then she finds the Tasokare Hotel, sitting in a twilight that never ends, and the staff explain what it is: a stopover between the living and the dead. People who land here are close to dying. Their room holds mementos, and through them they piece together what happened, look back at their life, and figure out whether they are dead or still alive. Most guests move on or go home within days. Neko starts recovering enough of her own memories to care about the others. She gets involved in their problems. Then something shifts. Solving the guests' affairs and the puzzle of the hotel itself turns out to be far too interesting to walk away from, and being just another guest is not enough for her. So she stays. Others have stayed too, for reasons of their own, and Neko is one of them now. What exactly is she still trying to remember, and what will it cost her to find out?
