Pumpkin Scissors
A long war between the Royal Empire and the Republic of Frost finally ended, and what came next was not peace. Soldiers went home to find nothing waiting for them. Whole villages were carved up by bandits and deserters, and the imperial government answered with a small unit nobody took seriously: Pumpkin Scissors, led by Alice L. Malvin, a young officer who actually believes relief work can hold a broken country together. Then a routine job goes sideways. Sent to clear renegade troops out of an occupied village, Alice runs into Randal Oland, a scarred ex-soldier with a gentle streak and a past he does not talk about. When the shooting starts, a mysterious blue lantern glows, Randal goes blank, and what walks out of that trance tears through the enemy like nothing human. Alice watches the whole thing. Any sane officer would walk away. She asks him to enlist instead, convinced the kind man underneath is the one who belongs in her squad. So what happens when the lantern lights up again, and the person standing next to him is someone he is supposed to protect?
