In the Forbidden City, the cats have it made. Sunbeams, stone lions, endless naps on warm tiles. Tourists point at them and take pictures. But six of these cats answer to something else. Luban and Momo handle the books. Shuangmei, Aobai, Pingan and Xiaozai handle the fighting. Together they are the Imperial Cat Room, and their real job starts when nobody is watching. Here is the catch: every artifact in the palace carries a memory, and those memories live inside a place called Wuhua. Something out there wants them gone. A destroyer called the Black Owl keeps tearing into Wuhua, twisting it, breaking the past apart piece by piece. So the six cats slip into that other world, claws out, and fight to set it straight. They lose sometimes. They get back up. They have done this more times than anyone has bothered to count. The palace looks peaceful because they keep winning. A question, though: what happens on the day the Black Owl gets tired of losing?
