In Edo, thieves whispered a name before they slept: Oni no Heizou. Heizou the Demon. A man whose shadow emptied alleyways, whose spies were called dogs and did the dirty work no official could touch. That is what a young stranger has come looking for. He knocks on doors, sits with three of Heizou's old admirers, Kumehachi, Hikujou and Omasa, and gets them talking. Bit by bit he pulls out the early years: the young Heizou, the informants, the streets that made him. Then he goes further. To Mejirodai, to the man's own house, where the wife Hisae opens up about a husband the legends never bothered to show. The stories the stranger collects do not add up to a hero's tale. Something else is pushing him from house to house, from one account to the next, and he is not sharing it with anyone. Because why would a young man spend his days chasing a legend's past if his own reason for knocking on that door has nothing to do with admiration?
