Tiara packs her bags and leaves the kingdom of Waleland for Mamkestell, a city that smells like old stone and magic. She only needs one thing from the academy there: to pass the entrance test. She does. Then she bumps into Rosetta, a childhood friend she has not seen in years, and just like that she has people again. Lavie, who runs everywhere. Ashley, who never panics. Lynette, who always has her nose in a book. Five girls, one dorm, and everything seems fine. Then the rankings come out. Noir at the top, Rouge in the middle, Lapis at the bottom. Guess where Tiara and her friends land. Lapis. And the rule is simple enough to ruin your whole week: fail an exam while ranked Lapis, and you are out the door. No second chance, no appeal. Tiara looks around at her new friends, at how casually they are treating this, and tells them they have to get serious. Now. There is one more thing pushing her, and she does not talk about it much. Her older sister is a singer, the kind of singer people stop and listen to, and Tiara wants to stand on that same stage someday. But first she has to keep five girls from getting expelled. Can she get them there without losing the thing that made them friends in the first place?
