After Midway, the fleet sails for the Solomons, where the Abyssals have gathered in force. In those waters sits Takao's Bottom, a graveyard of warships, and something there is poisoning the sea itself. Crimson patches spread across the surface. They eat through rigging, corrode steel, leave the girls helpless. And voices drift up from below. Nobody can explain them. Then, after a night raid goes right, the Eighth Fleet finds Kisaragi drifting unconscious on the waves. Alive. She sank long ago. She should not be here, and the way she acts settles cold in everyone's stomach. Fubuki alone walks through the red water untouched, and no one knows why. Is she immune, or is the curse saving her for something? The fleet has to keep pushing forward anyway. The Abyssals are dug in, the ocean is rotting around them, and one of their own has come back wrong. What did the sea decide to give back, and who is it really working for?
