Kafka Hibino was supposed to be someone by now. He and his best friend Mina swore they'd join the Defense Force together, back when monsters still flattened their hometown. She kept the promise. She's out there in uniform, cutting down kaijuu. He's thirty-two, mopping up the carcasses after she's done. Then a rookie named Reno shows up at his cleaning crew, eyes burning with the exact same dream Kafka buried years ago, and mentions the age limit just got bumped to thirty-three. One last shot. Kafka has no strength left, no training, nothing. Then a tiny flying kaijuu flies straight into his mouth. Just like that, the guy who sweeps up dead monsters becomes one. Big, humanoid, powerful enough to tear through the Defense Force's own soldiers. The military gives him a name: Kaijuu No. 8. Now they're hunting him, and the only people he ever wanted to stand beside are the ones aiming at his head. He can run and stay alive, or he can fight for the spot he's dreamed about since he was a kid. How long can a monster hide among the people trained to kill it?
