Chizuru came to Kyoto chasing a father and ended up staying for the Shinsengumi, the men who pulled her out of a monster's path. Now it is June of Keio's first year, the squad has set up at Nishi Honganji Temple, and the patrols keep turning up something ugly: thugs waving the Shinsengumi name while they rob and kill. Then word comes down that the Shogun himself is coming to Kyoto, which means Hijikata has to catch the fakes before the visit turns into a funeral. That is when the real mess starts. Several rasetsu break out of the compound, and the one who walked them out of their cell looks exactly like Chizuru. She is out in the city with Sakai, the treasurer, when the fighting spills into the streets, and she does not come back. Meanwhile, Satsuma has caught wind of Tosa ronin planning to put a blade in the Shogun, so Kazama and his crew are riding hard for Kyoto too. Coincidence? Nobody left standing believes that. Every thread is pulling tighter as the Shogun's arrival creeps closer, and Hijikata is running out of room to make a call. Was Chizuru taken, or did she walk out on her own two feet?
