Drossel is the last of the House of Flügel, and she lives in a giant fortress on Mercury with Gedächtnis, a butler robot who has served her family for generations. He dotes on her, remembers her late father with real reverence, and keeps the place running. She's fond of him too, in her own aristocratic way. The two of them have never once stepped outside those walls. Instead they fill the years with conversations that are supposed to be intellectually stimulating. They usually aren't. Then something absurd barges in. It always does. A weird visitor, a machine malfunction, some bit of chaos that turns a quiet afternoon upside down, and the high-minded discussion goes straight out the window. Meanwhile, twenty thousand years of war between humans and robots grind on somewhere far away. Drossel and Gedächtnis sit it out completely. They're not soldiers. They're not even participants. Just two robots passing the decades from 48650 to 48794 inside a fortress they've never left. Gedächtnis keeps the memory of the old master alive. Drossel keeps talking. The war keeps going. So what happens when the fighting finally reaches a place that has stayed out of it for twenty millennia?
