Cold, alone, no name, no past. A man wakes up in a snowy wasteland with nothing but the clothes on his back and a giant insect monster bearing down on him. He runs. It corners him anyway. Then a girl with animal ears and a tail cuts in and saves his life. Her name is Kuon, and she takes him back to her town, fighting off centipede creatures and a strange red slime along the way. She gives him a name too: Haku, after some famous figure from around those parts. That is when it hits him. Everyone here has ears and a tail. Every single person except him. He is the odd one out in a country called Yamato, and he has no idea why. So Haku settles in, makes friends, follows Kuon to the capital, and tries to figure out who he actually is. The trouble is, the more people he meets, the deeper he gets pulled into Yamato's politics and the quiet feuds simmering underneath. There is also that red slime, which nobody can explain, and neighboring countries that look ready to go to war. Haku keeps poking at the mysteries, but what happens when the answers he is looking for turn out to be the kind that start a war?
